Spalding Scorpions BMX
track
LATEST UPDATE
Just thought I would update you with the
progress of our track at Spalding. As you can see, the first straight has been
completed and part of the first berm also. It's hoped that the contractor will
complete the resurfacing sometime by the end of next week or the week after.
Once completed we are then looking to add
some more jumps and reintroduce an old section of the track which will include
another berm (with a set of doubles in the middle of it), a pro section
(doubles) and a huge step up jump. We just need to secure further funding and
a crucial meeting of The South Holland District Council in the next few weeks
will decide if we keep the track at this location or it is moved to the edge
of town.

Stewart Elderkin, who started bmx racing in 1982
and was a founder member of the original Spalding Scorpions BMX club and who
is now a member of the Spalding Cycling Club and club contact for all that is
BMX in the Spalding area has decided to get back into the BMX Racing after
over 10 years out and has been fighting to get the track rebuilt.
After much negotiating with the SHDC the newly
formed club, still to be known as "The Spalding Scorpions" are now in a
position where the BMX track at The Castle Sports Complex, Spalding will be
resurfaced shortly with Dolomite. There is still quite alot of work to be done
(funds permitting) relating to rebuilding some of the jumps, introducing new
jumps and trying to get hold of a new start gate but ultimately they are
looking to get the track back to national standard and become part of
East Anglia region once again.
The news regarding the track so far is that it is due to be resurfaced before
Christmas with dolomite and the local council have pledged £3000 towards this
initial stage. This will ensure that the track will be much safer to use. It
is then hoped that more people will use the track (as it'll be safer) which
will encourage more investment from new sources.
Initially, the club will be using the track for gate practice with their own 4
man gate and it is hoped that Adam Ellis (Spalding CC secretary) will be
utilising the track for Go-Ride sessions early next year.
Stewart attended a meeting with my local council in early November along with
representatives from Sustrans, Lincolnshire County Council, Highways
Dept, and although the meeting focused on getting more people out of their
armchairs and onto their bikes with ideas floated relating to more cycleways
and provision for cycling - it is now clear that our local council are very
pro active with improving the facilities in Spalding and it is hoped more
funding will be available in the new tax year.
