Braintree BMX Club
Race Report –
Manchester National
Round 1 - 15th January 2012.
The 2012 National BMX Championships got
underway in the home of British Cycling at Manchester Velopark last
weekend. Braintree Bullets BMX Club fielded 33 entries in an
enormous field of 710 riders, all looking to get their season off to
a flying start in the year that the World Championships return to
the UK.
The £24m Velopark holds an indoor track that
tests riders of all abilities to their limits and has facilities for
the riders to feel relaxed and comfortable in their surroundings.
The spectators are given an excellent view of the racing in the 3000
seater grandstand and the booming PA and DJ got the atmosphere in
the building up to boiling point.
Saturday night saw the UK Supercross open race
with some of Europe’s best riders competing in the big money racing.
The race was open to all riders over 17 and meant they had to
contend with the 8 metre high start hill and enormous jumps with
chasms of over 30 feet in length. The racing was top notch and Ollie
Cutmore was the first Braintree rider to ever compete at this level.
He put on a valiant effort in the heat races and managed to complete
the pro level track cleanly.
Onto the national race itself, and the racing
was split into blocks with the under 10s and cruisers racing their
motos first thing in the morning. The youngest Bullet was Chloe
Read-Millard who rode in her first ever national race in the 7-8
year old girls after only 3 months of BMXing.
Onto the 9s and it was Tyler Carter and Owen
Vaughan who narrowly missed out on the semi finals and the top 16
after tough quarter final races. Moving on through the qualifiers
was Luke Shriever who settled down through the day to take the 3rd
step on the podium in the A final.
Sydney Allen was the sole representative in the
hugely competitive 10 year olds class. He got off to great start by
winning his first moto in fine style and breezed through to the Semi
final stage. In the semi final he got cut off on the first straight
and had to settle for an 8th place finish in the B final.
The 24” wheeled cruiser classes started with
the 9-12 year olds and Noah Shriever worked his hardest in every
race to secure a fantastic 4th place finish in the A
final with Jo Carter also in the class. In the 13-14 year olds Shane
Redgewell and George Moret both made it through the qualifying
rounds to the A final. Moret looked to be up with the pack from the
start, but Redgewell was not to be outdone and with some awesome
cornering skill he worked his way through the pack to 6th
with Moret in 8th. One of the fastest cruiser classes is
the 17-29s and Ollie Cutmore didn’t disappoint the Bullets following
with a great display and a 5th place finish. Chris Potter
also rode in the class, but missed his semi final race so had to
ride in the B final which he won with ease. Andy Carter competed in
the 35-39s and finished 20th overall.
In block 2 the riders got bigger and the speed
and skill level increased. Jake Coombs had his best result to date
in the 11s and made his first national B final where he finished 8th
with club mate Ollie Rowe just ahead in 3rd. In the A
final there were another two Braintree riders who had opportunities
to make the podium. Josh Peters had been a favourite to win but a
slight wobble on the first jump saw him a bike length behind the
leader settling for 2nd and Charlie Ogrady mixed it up in
the pack to 6th. Lee Butson also competed in the quarter
final stages as did Brandan Boulter in the 12s.
Following his A final finish in the cruisers,
George Moret also made the A final in the 13s and rode a solid lap
to 6th place. In the B final Josh Legrove pulled out all
the stops to take 2nd with Shane Redgewell in 7th
after coming together with another rider on the second straight.
Evan Tulloch missed out on the semi final stage by just one place.
The 13-14 year old girls had some great battles
and Beth Shriever gritted her teeth to take 2nd place and
in the 14year old boys; Lee Golder started 2012 where he left off in
2011 with an A final win. Josh Butson rode in the A final in only
his second season of racing to a super 7th. Cameron Short
and Charlie Giles also competed in the heat races of the class.
Taylor Andrews made a smooth path to the A
final in the 16s. Last year’s British Champ came out all guns
blazing in the final but the pack all came together in the first
corner and Taylor got caught up with some other riders to eventually
finish 7th. The 15-16 girls was an uncharacteristically
action packed affair. The level field made for some great racing, in
the A final the girls all went over the first jump elbow to elbow
and something was going to have to give. Regrettably, it was Kelsey
Dixon who had a huge crash with two other riders whilst in 3rd;
fortunately she got up ok and finished 7th. Lana
Redgewell was lucky to avoid the carnage and made up for the others
misfortune to ride to a fine 4th place.
The last age group before the pro classes is
the 17-24s and there is always some great action. Fresh from his
Supercross debut on Saturday night was Ollie Cutmore who made yet
another A final where he battled in the pack to 7th.
Chris Potter rode in the B final to 6th. The oldest of
the competing Bullets was the club coach Julian Allen who rode in
the Masters class to 21st place, just outside the semi
finals.
The Bullets Winter Series continues on February
5th at the Panfield Road track. This will be the 5th
round of the series and will also form part of the annual Pride of
Essex Cup between the home club and Dagenham. Registration for the
event closes at 11.30am on the day and is open to all. For more

Braintree BMX Club Race Report 8th January 2011.
The Braintree Bullets BMX Club 2012 season
kicked off last weekend with round 4 of their Winter Race series.
With the festive period out of the way, the club played host to 64
riders from as far afield as the Midlands and ages ranged from 5
years old to 45 years young. Gorgeous winter skies treated the
spectators over the day and there was some fantastic on track
action.
The Formula 5 class for the 7 and unders kicked
off the racing and saw a great mix of experience and new riders
competing for the first time. The class was won by Josh Abbott with
a clean sheet of race wins and he was followed home by Barney
Devereux from the Midlands. Eddie Cannons competed for Braintree in
only his second race meeting to a fine 3rd place with
club mates Harry Lonton, William Hale, Kai Judd, Ted Reeves and Ben
Oates in tow.
The biggest and most evenly competitive class
of the day was the Formula 4 for 8-10 year olds. There were 15
riders who battled it out for the top spot with Thomas Knight going
unbeaten all day to be the victor. Harry Collins had shone in his
heat races but slipped to 2nd in the final and Seb
Pantlin took his knew steed to 3rd. Jamie Edwardes
battled his way up to 4th after a run off for the final
place in the final.
Onto the Formula 3 for 11-12year olds which saw
another unbeaten rider in the form of Christian White taking the
win. Joe Read-Millard, Tom Stokes and Sydney Allen all compete in
the 10 year olds at National level and rode up in this class for the
competition, finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th
respectively. Tyler Carter stepped up from the 9 year olds to battle
his way to 5th with fellow Bullets; Alfie Giles, Max
Giles, Jake Coombs and Adam Whiteley fighting out the rest of the
placings.
Yet another unbeaten class win went to George
Moret in the Formula 2 for 13-14 year olds. Second place went to
Charlie O’Grady who rode up from the 11s and Royston’s Dan Blanche
rode up from the 12s to 3rd place in the final. In 4th
was Cameron Short who looked on form from Ipswich’s Alex Pike and
Kyle Gladwell securing 5th and 6th. The
Bullets brought up the tail end of the field with Evan Tulloch in 7th
and Charlie Giles in 8th.
The Senior class for the 25+ was a hotly
contested affair. Matt Hillyard took the win for Ipswich on his 4x
Mountainbike with a clean sheet of wins and Andy Carter rode
smoothly to 2nd place. The 35-39 East Anglian champ Mark
Spenner returned to racing after an autumn lay off to finish 3rd
with Lee Firmin hot on his wheels in 4th.
Ipswich also took the win in the super fast
Formula 1 class. John Lillingstone got to the front in every race
and is looking sharp for the forthcoming nationals. Elite 4x
Mountainbiker Tom Dowie from Bedfordshire came along to test out his
new BMX bike and showed he can swap over to the smaller wheels with
a burly jumping style in 2nd place. Braintree coach
Julian Allen jumped his way into 3rd place from club mate
Jake Britton in 4th.
Sidehack racing finished off the day. The pairs
put on a demonstration event for fun, but had some hard fought
races. It was an all Braintree line up and the final was a great
race with two father and son pairings taking the top spots. Steve
and Adam Gilbert lead from the start with Julian and Sydney Allen
tucked in close as they went into the first corner. When they came
into the second straight The Gilberts still had the lead but The
Allens had closed the gap with the inside line into the second berm.
As they went into the turn, it was the Allens who held the dominate
line, leaving the Gilberts with a slower run into the third
straight. The race closed up again down the last straight, but on
the line it was The Allens who took the win.
The Bullets Winter Series continues on February
5th at the Panfield Road track. This will be the 5th
round of the series and will also form part of the annual Pride of
Essex Cup between the home club and Dagenham. Registration for the
event closes at 11.30am on the day and is open to all. For more

East Anglian Championships – Milton Keynes – 23.10.11
The final race
of the East Anglian BMX summer calendar took place in Milton Keynes
last weekend. The East Anglian Championships gives all the riders a
last chance to grab some silverware before the winter series
commences.
The Bullets
fielded 30 entries out of the 155 listed to race and brought home
some fantastic results.
In the Cruiser
classes the 9-12s was won by Shane Redgewell with club mate Evan
Tulloch finishing just behind in 2nd in the 13-15s. The
super fast 16-29 year olds class saw some great battles and the
Bullets took 2nd and 3rd in the shape of Chris
Potter and Olly Cutmore. Moving up to the 30-39 class with regional
champion; Mark Spenner who took a well deserved 3rd after
a first turn tumble and Darren Macal rode in the 40-44 class. The
ladies were well represented in the 25+ with Tracey Clarke having
her first race away from her home track finishing 4th and
Nadine Mcfedries keeping it consistent in 5th. Lana
Redgewell was the sole representative in the 14-15s and rode well to
a 2nd place spot on the podium.
In the expert
classes and starting off with the 8 year olds, Owen Vaughan scored
solid moto results to ride in the A final to 5th place
with Harrison Boulter in 7th. Morgan Spenner rode to 2nd
in the B final. The 9 year olds had a number of out of region
national riders in the class which made for some super competitive
racing. Tom Stokes wasn’t put off by the competition and found
himself right at the sharp end in 2nd place. Sydney Allen
had been battling for a podium spot in the early stages of the final
but an off track excursion saw him relegated to 8th with
Jamie Edwardes sneaking past for 6th. Olly Rowe had a
convincing win in the 10 year olds with 3 wins out of 4 races. Lee
Butson narrowly missed out on the podium in 4th followed
by Jake Coombs in 5th and Alfie Giles in 6th.
Following great
heat results Brandan Boulter looked set for a top final finish but
came off second best in an on track battle to finish 5th
and Shane Redgewell breezed to the win in the 12s by nearly the
whole of the last straight. The 13/14 year olds were mixed and the
younger lads showed the older riders the way home. Josh Butson was
the top rider for the Bullets with a 3rd place finish.
Evan Tulloch rode well to 5th and Charlie Giles battled
hard to 7th. Iwan Williams finished 3rd in the
B final. Each class had a “Holeshot” cash prize for the first rider
into the first turn as well as the final podium trophies for the top
3 finishers. In the Masters class, Club-Coach Julian Allen took both
prizes with a great first straight he stole the cash prize and kept
ahead of the field to win the race and take the trophy.
Where the 17
and over class lacked numbers, it made up for in talent and again
the Bullets riders were ahead of the game. Chris Potter rode to
another 2nd place to match his cruiser class finish,
representing his new sponsor – Love Not Money Factory Team. Darren
Eastall was hot on Chris’ tail though and kept him honest in 3rd
with the third Bullets ride; Olly Cutmore in 5th.
The East
Anglian winter series commences on Sunday 30th October in
Royston with registration closing at 11am. The Bullets winter club
series continues on Sunday 6th November with registration
also closing at 11am. Coaching sessions will be running throughout
the winter and information can be sought at
